Making a Poster

It is a simple "getting started" tutorial. We shall make a simple artisitc-like poster. In order to do it, let us follow few steps:
1. After opening a photo, in the menu go to Filter->Stylize->Solarize. This will perform solarization filter.
Solarisation is a phenomenon in photography in which the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed in tone. Dark areas appear light or light areas appear dark.
2. Now we shell invert our image. You can use either Ctrl+I either in the menu go to Image->Adjustments->Invert.
3. Now, our poster is too bright. Let us perform Auto Color. In the menu go to Image->Adjustments->Auto Color. Also you can use Auto Color Button from the toolbar.
4. Now in the menu go to Image->Adjustments->Posterize. This will launch the Posterization dialog box. By default we are suggested 10 layers. For this high-contrast and colored image, a good layers range is [8; 24]. You can play with the slider to chose the best result. I chose 20 layers.

The variation to the previous poster, could be the furter filter processing:
5. In the menu go to Filter->Other->Maximum. In the dialog box we schoud chose the radius for the filter. The radius depends on the image features sizes, and so on image resolution. For our image resolution (1024x768) the radius=1 is enough.
This filter perform the morphological dilation operation. We use to get rid of noise and create edges at the smooth areas.
6. Now we are redy to apply gradient filter. In the menu go to Filter->Stylize->Find Edges.
After performing this filter, we have a numeous color lines at the photo, they underscore the geometry (due to maximum filter).
7. At the end, we make all these lines more visible by the contrast enhancemet. In the menu go to Image->Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast. In the dialog box, set the Contrast to value "+100".

Starting from version 1.0.30 the Graff has new valuable features. We shell use them in the new variation of poster creation.
1. After opening a photo, in the menu go to Filter->Other->High Pass. Chose the radius equal to 3 and press OK button. This will perform high pass filter, i.e. we get only high frequencies of the initial image. The Radius here is the radius of the Gaussian kernel and the result could be mathematically represented as Result = Image - Gauss(Image, R).
2. Now we are ready to apply gradient filter. In the menu go to Filter->Stylize->Find Edges.
After performing this filter, we get small tiles which come from JPEG compression, and which are impossible to derive without high pass filter.
3. At the end, we make all these lines more visible by Histogram Equalization. In the menu go to Image->Adjustments->Equalize.
We have got a poster, constructed by tiles, which is difficult to distinguish from a big distance.
